What began as an ordinary hearing soon became something else entirely, as witnesses contradicted themselves, evidence defied explanation, and the truth slipped further from reach with every word spoken.

 The events in this story are drawn from Carroway Island oral tradition, reconstructed court records, and generations of island storytelling. Whether Josiah Wren was the victim of circumstance, deception, or something far stranger is left for each reader to decide.
