Each spring, with the first steady turn of the season, the people of Carroway gather in the central meadows to conduct what has become known simply as the Oyster Races.
It is not claimed that the oysters compete.
Only that, under proper conditions, they do not remain still.

Oysters are selected from the morning harvest and placed evenly at the start line.
Movement is encouraged through proximity, warmth, and suggestion.
The first to fully cross the line is generally regarded as having completed the race.

10:00 AM — Grounds Open
10:30 AM — Oyster Selection
11:00 AM — Opening Heat
12:15 PM — Midday Recess
1:00 PM — Second Heats
2:30 PM — Final Heat
3:00 PM — Conclusion
The races are accompanied by provisions drawn from the day’s catch—oysters, stews, and what is otherwise available. Crowds gather close, discussions form quickly, and conclusions are rarely final.
Visitors are welcome.
Understanding is not required.
