In the winter of 1857, during the Great Freeze, something appeared on the frozen Chesapeake Bay that should not have been possible. . . a skipjack moving across solid ice as if the water beneath it still remembered how to flow.

It all began one winter evening at Haddie's Fish Shak, when Crazy Jack settled by the stove and began a tale no one would forget.

Across the frozen bay it glided silently and watched by men who could not believe what they saw.

Benjamin Pike led a small party to uncover the truth, but the closer they came, the deeper the mystery grew.

Narrator/Observer
A teller of tall tales, keen eyes, and a memory like the bay.

Fish Shak Keeper
Keeper of the shore, good food, and better stories.

Town Figure/Skeptic
A practical man who seeks facts, and when the truth is slippery.

The Skipjack
A sturdy little vessel built for the bay . . . and this night.
What begins as local folklore soon becomes a tale of strange tracks across the ice, a dark sail moving where no boat should travel, and a young waterman determined to uncover the truth. The Phantom Skipjack is a Carroway Island Tale by Robert Gill Jr.
The events in this story are drawn from Carroway Island oral tradition and reconstructed mariner's accounts of the Great Freeze of 1857. Whether the skipjack truly crossed the ice remains a matter of interpretation.
A bell, a legend and a sound that returns when the island needs it most.
